Indoor cats have a pretty easy life, but just like humans, staying home all the time can get boring. That’s where cat enrichment can help.
Enrichment is a term that describes how we can add stimuli to an animal’s environment that caters to their natural instincts to hunt, forage, and more. There are 3 types of enrichment: environmental, social, and cognitive.
Cognitive: Cognitive enrichment includes all the things that make your cat stop and think.
Examples of cognitive enrichment include:
- Food Mats/Puzzles.
Social: Cats cannot entertain themselves by their lonesome. They rely on us (and other animals) to enrich and develop their social skills.
Examples of social enrichment include:
- Playtime with their owner(s)
- Relaxation/Downtime with their owner(s).
- Playtime with furry friends.
Environmental: Outdoor cats get environmental enrichment just by being outside and experiencing all that nature has to offer, but for indoor cats, we have to enrich their environment.
Examples of environmental enrichment include:
- Cat Toys: Adding new toys every once in a while to your cat’s rotation excitement to their day. Including different types of toys (i..e, wand toys, ball toys, laser toys, etc.) allows them flexibility and options.
